Bacall, Miss

   This is used as a kind of type name in Kimmie, by John Paddy Carstairs. The reference is to the wellknown actress Lauren Bacall (born Betty Joan Perske) and her name is used because it is recognizably that of an actress. The passage in the novel runs as follows: ‘“Mornin’ Miss Bacall!” she yelled out. That was Priscilla’s daily joke. She thought of an actress, usually a most unsuitable comparison, and chi-acked Kimmie with a new name every day.’ Kimmie, the heroine of the novel, is an aspiring young actress.
